A trip
was organized for US congressman Jim Moody to Crimea in
1990, and a meeting with the legendary leader of the
Crimean freedom fighter Mustafa Cemiloglu was arranged.
Crimean Turks who had been forcefully moved in Central
Asia in 1945 by Joseph Stalin were allowed to return
back to their homes during Gorbachev's late years in
office. However, various but very serious problems such
as homelessness, and unemployment had forced the
Crimeans to do hunger strikes in their cardboard homes.
Jim Moody's visit during which Ercüment Kılıç also acted
as the translator, later on proved very helpful in the
US. Mr. Moody did extensive work back in the US, telling
the plight of the Crimeans to the American
administration, the congress and the media
