KILIÇ'S 2003-2004 ACCOMPLISHMENTS AT ATAA


 

1. ATAA’S EDUCATIONAL AND PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES

·     ATAA membership has increased by 60%.

·     A congressional Internship program for Turkish-American students has been launched (Armenians have been doing this for 30 years)  - Read More

·     Scholarships have been awarded to students for the first time in ATAA's history 

·     Close relations have been established with the American Congress. ATAA has brought in two new members to the Congressional Turkish Caucus - Read More

·     For the first time, ATAA has held luncheon and dinner programs for the students, as well as other programs targeting the youth.

·     ATAA organized a panel discussion titled "Future of Turkey-EU-US Relations", examining the October 6, 2004 European Commission. Read More

·     For the first time, ATAA has held meetings for the Turkish blue-collar community. - Read More

·     ATAA sponsored a conference titled "The Armenian Allegation of Genocide." The guest speakers were Professor Justin McCarthy of the University of Louisville and Asst. Prof. Yucel Acer (University of Canakkale-18 Mart.  The
conference was held at the University of Minnesota campus, and was attended by more than 70 people. Read More

·     ATAA has held a joint conference with the Foundation for Defense for Democracies (FDD), a think-tank in Washington, DC. Egemen Bagis of AKP and Onur Oymen of CHP have been brought from Turkey to be guest speakers. Read More

·     The first conference for the Uyghur Turks has been organized. The keynote speaker was Mr. Erkin Alptekin of the Uyghur Turks. At this biggest and most crowded ATAA meeting, representatives from the New York Times, the Washington Post, U.S. State Department and Chinese Embassy were also present. - Read More       

·     THE TURKISH WORLD: A new magazine has been launched, focusing on not Turkish and American internal politics, but on culture, history, the Turkish world, community news and news from our component associations. Each issue features a different Turkic country. - Read More

·     Ercument Kilic has traveled 50.000 miles, and has met with ATAA’s 25 component organizations. - Read More

·     ATAA has organized a large-scale conference with TUSIAD in Istanbul during the 2003 Annual Delegation Trip to Turkey.

·     ATAA has organized a large-scale conference with TOBB in Ankara during the 2004 Annual Delegation Trip to Turkey.- Read More

·     A conference about Iraqi Turkmen has been organized. Turkish Front Washington Representative Orhan Ketene was the speaker.

·     ATAA has held a roundtable discussion with various Turkish-American NGOs in Washington DC to brainstorm about the necessary steps after the referendum in Cyprus. - Read More

·     Component association's news and activities have been circulated to an extensive group of recipients.

·     Responses have been sent to the media following positive and negative coverage of issues that concern Turkey.    Action campaigns have been launched when necessary.

·     A public library has been created at ATAA's building.

·     Washington area Turkish artisans and small business owners have been visited in person.

·     A total of about 20 congressmen, senators and State Department officials have been visited before and after the Cyprus referendum, and have been briefed by the experts of the subject. - Read More

·     The relationship that started with the Turks of Bulgaria under the leadership of our former president Dr. Orhan Kaymakcalan has been maintained. ATAA has hosted a delegation of 30 people, including the Bulgarian Minister of Economy and Turkish businessmen, and introduced them to American businessmen, industrialists, and IT company representatives. - Read More

·     A conference for the Bulgarian Mufti, who was invited by the U.S. government, has been organized at the ATAA building.

·     The relationship established with Azerbaijan during the leadership of our former president Tamer Acikalin has been enhanced; an official delegation trip to Azerbaijan was organized.

·     A very successful and well-attended ATAA convention has been held in January 2004. - Read More

·     Two luncheon/dinners have been organized for the Turkish media, and were sponsored by Turkish restaurant owners –who are now ATAA members– in Washington, DC.

·     An ATAA calendar, although had to be delayed due to some difficulties, has been published for the first time.

·     The office personnel have attended several educational seminars.

·     Press releases have been issued following the terrorist attacks in Istanbul. ATAA President Ercument Kilic has attended and spoke at various conferences. - Read More

·     The Turkish-American community has been for the first time represented at the National Presidential Convention. - Read More

.     ATAA President Ecüment Kılıç has been invited by the U.S. State Department as U.S. Speaker and Specialist to conduct a series of lectures and programs on the subject of integration of immigrant populations into western societies in Austria and Germany: - Read More

·     ATAA started conducting a survey to evaluate the Turkish-American community's public opinion regarding 2004 presidential elections. Read More

·     ATAA established a vital communication channel for ATAA members: ATAAnet1@yahoogroups.com This platform allows ATAA Component Associaction presidents to share ideas and thoughts among themselves.

·     ATAA established another new vital  communication channel for ATAA members: ATAA_voice@yahoogroups.com This platform allows ATAA members to share ideas and thoughts not only with one another, but also with the ATAA administration.

·     For the first time, ATAA has held an art exhibition at its building (Thanks to Hurriyet reporter Mr. Mehmet Biber) - Read More 

·     ATAA has organized an Ebru exhibition of the Istanbul Municipality at the Decatur House near White House

·     ATAA organized a performance by Turkish National Ballet Modern Dance Ensemble at Kennedy Center in Washington DC.

 

2. RENEWAL OF ATAA’S TECHNICAL AND PHYSICAL BACKGROUND

·     The Internet connection has been switched to cable from dial-up, bringing the office up to speed. 

·     Computers have been updated and renewed.

·     Membership forms have been updated to obtain more information about members in order to serve them better.

·     A 12 year-old database, which was operated in DOS and was written in FORTRAN, was replaced with a modern database.

·     A server has been bought.

·     The e-mail list has been classified according to different groups, including ATAA's current and former members, Turkish Members of the Parliament, U.S. Congressmen, Turkish Caucus Members, ATAA component associations, Turkish Student Associations across the U.S., Azerbaijani groups, Jewish groups, Turkish media in the U.S., Turkish media in Turkey, U.S. media, etc.

·     ATAA building has become fully functional.

·     The outdated ATAA website has been redesigned and is being updated continuously.

·     Office costs have been minimized.

·     E-mail newsletters have been updated, and have become more efficient and noticable.

·     ATAA's 10 years old e-mail address list has been evaluated, cleaned up and updated, now including 25K recipients.

·     Communication with various Turkish yahoo groups has been started, significantly increasing the circulation of the online newsletter.
