Diaspora's
insurance game:
June 12, 2003-HURRIYET said: "The Armenian diaspora in the U.S. which
produces plot after plot to push Turkey into a corner, is now planning to
pull a terrific compensations trick. A 100-YEARS-OLD AFFAIR: Ercument Kilic,
chairman of the Turkish-American Assemblies, says that the insurance
policies bought by Armenians during the Ottoman era are now in the hands of
a number of American and French companies. THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS
PROBLEM: Kilic says, 'The policy figures add up to trillions of lira. In the
past, it was being stated that these policies were no longer valid due to
the statute of limitations. However, California Governor Davis has announced
that the statute of limitations will not apply to this issue.' UNLESS
MEASURES GET TAKEN: Kilic says that unless effective measures get taken
without delay the Armenians might seek 'genocide compensation' from the
insurance companies and the latter from Turkey, compensation amounting to
trillions of lira."
