President Bush, following the tragic events of
September 11, began the White House tradition of
inviting the foreign diplomats of the Muslim
countries in Washington, DC for an annual Ramadan
dinner. He invites to these dinners not only the
dignitaries of the predominantly Muslim nations but
also other nations who have Muslim citizens. To this
year's dinner, besides some people from Washington
think tanks, and universities, I was also invited as
the only leader of an ethnic group. Hosting the
dinner along with President Bush, were Condoleeza
Rice and Colin Powell
The evening began with a reception. During the
reception, those who desired to offer their evening
prayers were shown into another room.
Later on, we followed a Marine corporal on the
winding steps upstairs, into the main dining room.
Then The President entered the room. He was greeted
by the applauding audience off their chairs. I was
especially honored as I noticed the others seated at
the same table with Mr. Bush by my table. They were
the ambassadors of Turkey and Azerbaijan, Faruk
Logoglu and Hafiz Pashayev respectively.
As the president came to the podium to welcome his
guests, his first words were "Mubarek Ramadan",
"Holly Ramadan! He gave a short speech indicating
his desires for a world of peace, democracy,
tolerance, and understanding.
I had an opportunity to have a long chat with the
Bulgarian ambassador Ms. Elena Poptodorova who set
next to me. We shared our common feelings of
satisfaction of having seen the wonderful
developments in Bulgaria for the Turkish minority.
Turks in Bulgaria now represented with their own
party, with 22 representatives, and enjoying a
partnership in the government and seats of
ministries, not to mention the 4 Turkish women in
the house of representatives.
Following the dinner, we followed President Bush to
another room for a photo session opportunity. When
it was my turn, shared with him that I was a student
resident at University of Texas in Austin where he
was the governor, then I was a businessman in Dallas
where he owned a baseball team. He reminded me then,
"Don't mess with Texas right?" He also reminded me
how much he enjoyed Turkey during his visit there
for the occasion of the NATO summit last summer, and
he added "I will go back again one of these days
when I can truly enjoy the rest of the beauties of
your country.
As I was leaving, he smiled big and added -I thought
teasing both himself and I- "It's nice to be in the
White House huh?". I said, "Yes sir it sure is".
